Less about race, more about posturing. The growing Poly-Ethnic Society

Photo: Steve Stout
The millennium youth are growing up in a society that is becoming less concerned about racial identity. Between 1 -7 marriages are mixed-marriages while Black women are now less likely to become or remain married. Children are growing in a poly-ethnic environment.

As parents, elders, and mentors we might consider this paradigm shift as we continue to guide our children.  How has hip-hop influenced mainstream pop culture? Hear how former music executive Steve Stoute, became the CEO of ad agency Translation, and, how he broke down cultural boundaries by bringing the untapped resource of hip-hop into the world of marketing.

Why Males Need Initiation - Friar Richard Rohr

The Golden Fold Movement is conceptually based upon traditional African and Native American Rites of Passage Processes in a contemporary delivery model......

In "Why Males Need Initiation," Friar Richard Rohr shows how from his Christian perspective primal societies have demonstrated that cultural survival is dependent on personal spirituality. Unfortunately, the proven way to lead males on this journey has been lost to the West for a thousand years. Fr. Richard addresses the reality that if men are not led through an inner journey of powerlessness, they will inevitably misunderstand and abuse power.

Our High School Young Leaders will receive certificates that state that they have provided 38 hours of community service to the Golden Fold as they have been Junior mentors to our Middle School Young Leaders. Our session will end with a group photo including program staff, parents, and Young Leaders. Young Leaders should dress in a white shirt, dark pants, and wear a long or bow tie for this special session.

Parents should plan to attend this session with your Young leader as well. Since the parents will appear in photos, parents should dress with that understanding.

See you then !

05 25 2013 Life Mapping and Football !

Today The Golden Fold's Young Leaders will enjoy........or maybe struggle with special guest Felicia Ford the Founder of The Gifted Group. We will also bond with a group of Young Leaders from Suffolk, Virginia. Ms. Ford will assist us in creating life maps with turn by turn directions ! After her thought provoking session we will enjoy a game of flag football (or maybe tackle........maybe....) and end the session enjoying a hearty lunch at The Golden Coral in Virginia Beach (Call Kinji 757-401-1240) for details.

Ms. Felicia Ford is the founder and principal of The Gifted Group, LLC. Felicia holds a master of science degree in business management with certifications in Change Management, Project Management, and Information Technology and Business Transformation.
Before graduating from Old Dominion University, Felicia sang as a professional background vocalist for her first live recording catapulting a professional music career as a background vocalist singing at concerts, live and background studio vocals for CD/Album projects, all of which equipped her to enter the position as an artist manager.

"I am a small town academic whose big dreams led to a life near the ocean, where now my reality includes helping others fulfill their own." - Felicia Ford

As an artist manager, Felicia learned to strengthen an artist’s fan base and marketing reach via Internet and terrestrial radio in major markets in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Felicia managed the business, tours, and bookings as well as secured her artist as the headliner and opener for major recording artists. She also secured bookings and sang background at events with artists such as Todd Dulaney, Travis Greene, Melinda Watts, JoAnn Rosario, Luther Barnes, Maurette Brown Clark, Smokie Norful, Tye Tribbett, Norman Hutchins and more. Today our Young Leaders will leave feedback on what they learned from Ms. Ford's guidance.

Happy Mother's Day Belated to our Golden Mothers. Among two of the gifts that have been reported to us is a Young Leader Shawn who just won his campaign to be the Junior Class President of Tallwood High School. Also another Golden Mother reveled in her Young Leader's (D.J. B*WIN) entrepreneurial spirit, he entered the D.J. business world as a 12 year old. It's always good to have a DJ in the fold. Congratulations Mothers. Below is a song D.J. B*WIN performed for his mother a few years ago.

My son is smart, but he's not making it. - What's next ?

Do you worry that your child isn’t performing to his potential?  Are you frustrated by your child’s lack of effort in her classes?  Do you see giant gaps between what you know your child is capable of doing … and what he actually does in school?

You’re not alone.  Motivation is a tricky subject for parents, teachers, and counselors alike.  Join us for a session in which we’ll share ideas about supporting motivation in your children and students.  While no one workshop can cover every aspect of this broad topic, our goal is to introduce you to the resources, tools, and people who can help you understand what makes your child (or students) tick and how you can help.

Your laptop, iPad, or other wireless device – we will practice using an online tool for parents, teachers and counselors.

We encourage parents to bring their concerns and questions, interact with school personnel and other parents, and help us determine how we can best support your ongoing efforts to keep our children motivated to achieve.

Though not required, pre-registration is preferred in order for us to plan effectively.  If you hope to attend, please contact Sandra Maxwell to let her know you expect to participate in the Motivation for Accomplishment workshop.  She can be reached by telephone or, preferably, by email at:

Sat. 3/23/13 The PHAT Conference is GOLDEN !

The plans for 3/23/13 have changed.

SALUTE TO CONNECTED SPIRIT FOR CATCHING THE EARLIER MISTAKE
Instead of attending the S.T.E.M. Expo in Portsmouth we will attend the 3/23/13 PHAT Conference at Booker T. Washington from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Here is the plan. One of our The Golden Fold Mentors will greet our Young Leaders at Booker T. Washington at 8:45 am for parents who wish to drop off their Young Leaders at BTW. Kinji Ridley will meet Young Leaders at Tidewater Community College (our normal location) begining at 8:30 with a TCC van to transport the members of SAAB and our Young Leaders to the PHAT conference. After the conference our Young Leaders will either be picked up by their parents at 3:00 pm or trtansported to TCC and arriving approximately at 3:40 pm. If you wish to confirm arrangements contact Brother Kinji 757-401-1240.
The 6th Annual PHAT (Promoting Healthy Active Teens) conference is on Saturday, March 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Booker T. Washington High School. This conference was created by middle and high school students as well as parents to share pertinent information to keep teens healthy.

This conference is presented by the Cooper-Mercer Institute, who develops health and wellness programs for under-served populations, and will include workshops, entertainment, informational booths, breakfast and lunch. Cooking demonstrations and lunch will be prepared by Norfolk Public Schools culinary arts students under the direction of Chef Damon Armstrong in an effort to promote National Nutrition Month and bring awareness to adolescent obesity.
This year, in order to gain entry into the conference, attendees are asked to show community support and donate food that will go toward the Backpack Program at Jacox Elementary School.
One of the culminating activities of the conference is a step show competition that promotes a rigorous, fun and non-intimidating way to encourage fitness. Volunteers and organizations are encouraged to come out and participate.
